Many hosting services use the 'cPanel' software to give users an easy way to manage their hosting account.
One feature of cPanel is "Fantastico." Fantastico provides "one click" installation (it's actually more than 1 click) of many open source web applications. It provides a great and easy way to experiment with different applications.
Although most advanced Joomla users prefer to install Joomla manually, Fantastico provides a perfectly good alternative to many.
In order to install Joomla with Fantastico, you will first log into your web hosting control panel. The Fantastico icon is usually located somewhere near the bottom of the cPanel page.
Once you start Fantastico, you will see a list of available applications on the left side of the screen.
Click on "Joomla 1.5" on the menu.
You will then see a brief description of Joomla. To create a new installation of Joomla, click on "New Installation."
Next, you will be asked to fill out a form with some basic information about your Joomla site. Let's look at the fields in the form:
|Install on Domain||Use this box to select the domain where you want to install Joomla. This is only an option if you have multiple domain names being managed by your cPanel hosting account.|
|Install in Directory||this determines the address where your Joomla installation will be accessible at. If you want to use Joomla for your home page, just leave this field blank, otherwise put in a folder name. Note: the folder should not exist at this point. Fantastico will create it for you.
|Admin access data||this is the username and password for the super-administrator of the Joomla site. This will be the initial login for your site.|
|Base Configuration Admin e-mail||your e-mail address|
|Admin full name||your name|
|Site Name||the name of your website that will be displayed on the front page|
|Install Sample Data||Fantatico will optionally install the sample Joomla data (articles, menus, modules) if you wish. This is usefull when you are first getting started, but if you are designing a new site from the "ground up" you will probably not want to have the sample data installed.|
Once you have filled in the form, the next step is to click on the "Install Joomla" button.
You will be asked to confirm that you want to install Joomla. After a few seconds, you will see an informatin page that confirms that Joomla was installed successfully.
Be sure to remember your login and password!
In addition, Fantastico will send an email to the email address of the site administrator (probably you) with the same information.
That's it. You are now ready to log in and start building your Joomla based website.
