How do I backup my Joomla website?

I recently answered an important question on the Joomla forum about backup strategy for Joomla websites.   The question was: "I have some questions about backup.   If I go on my ftp and download the www folder that everything lies within and I zip this file. Will this be good enough to restore my web with all content from my last backup?

If yes, how come all the programs about backup is out there, even some that charge money. If now, what program should I use? And are the comercial programs better then the free?
