An Overview of Joomla Installation Options

PDF | Print | E-mail

Joomla is a web-based website management program and is installed on the webserver where you will be hosting the website itself.

Now, how do you get it there?

First of all, there are several ways to install Joomla, and many different server destinations, so there is no quick and simple answer to that question.

First of all, let's start with a link to the official Joomla installation guide.

Let's take a look at some of the common Joomla installation options:

  • Many webhosts offer "one-click"  installation (well, it's more like three or four clicks) through "Fantastico" or some other similar "script installer."  This is a great way to get a Joomla site up and running in just a few minutes.  Here is a link to installing Joomla with Fantastico.
  • Perhaps you want to install Joomla manually.  If you have a level of comfort using FTP and can create a mySQL database through your hosting service control panel, then follow these directions in the Joomla installation manual.
  • Are you using GoDaddy as your webhost?  Here is a link to a long thread on the Joomla forum with some special help for installing Joomla on GoDaddy servers .
  • Are you installing to a Windows based web-host?  You may find this information helpful.
  • If you run into problems, there is an entire area of the Joomla forum dedicated to installation problems .  Do some searching there and you'll find some good tips.
  • Do you want to install a copy of Joomla on your own computer?  This can be handy for developing your site "offline" but there are some special challenges!  You'll need to install an Apache web server on your computer as well as mySQL, but fortunately there are Joomla tools that will make it easier.  You can try the Ravenswood Joomla server, the Joomla Stand Alone Server.  And, here is a forum article with step-by-step instructions for setting up Joomla on xammp
